Venice’s access-fee arrangements depend on the date and the rules published by the city. They are separate from attraction tickets and from the tourist tax associated with overnight accommodation. Always start with the official municipal portal.

Status checked on 5 October 2026

The official access-fee portal states that the 2026 trial period has ended and that, from 27 July 2026, payment or an exemption request is no longer required under that trial. It also states that decisions about application after 2026 belong to the city’s governing bodies.

This is a dated status check, not a promise about future trips. Before travelling, open the official portal again and look for the calendar and rules that apply to your exact date.

Access fee versus tourist tax

The access fee concerns entry under the city’s specified scheme. Tourist tax relates to overnight stays and is handled through accommodation arrangements. Paying one should not be assumed to satisfy every possible requirement of the other.

During active schemes, categories of exclusion or exemption and any registration steps are defined by the city. Do not rely on a past year’s screenshot or a general claim that all overnight guests need to do the same thing.

Use the official process

Go to the municipal access-fee portal for the current calendar, eligibility guidance and any required payment or exemption process. Check the domain carefully before entering personal or payment details.

This guide does not sell access vouchers or collect exemption documents. Keep any official confirmation available during your visit when the applicable rules require it.

Plan the rest of the trip separately

An access-fee payment is not a ticket to the basilica, palace or public transport. Book those according to their own conditions. Likewise, arriving by train or staying outside the historic centre does not by itself tell you whether a future access-fee rule applies.

Use the official FAQ for your particular circumstances and revisit it if your travel date changes. For transport and arrival planning, continue to getting to Venice and getting around.
